Rotorua Museum of Art and History

Te Puia

This thermal valley has great geological significance, with thermal activity ranging from boiling mud to the world-famous 30 metre high Pohutu geyser, erupting up to 20 times each day. Geysers, hot springs , boiling sulphurous pools, silica terraces and bubbling mud pools are among the natural wonders. The valley is also home to many species of native plants and animals.

Te Puia is home to national schools of carving and weaving, where you can watch and interact with master carvers, weavers and their students.

Buried Village

Take time to visit the excellent museum that tells the story of the people and places involved in the eruption of Mt Tarawera. Stroll among the excavated buried homes and workplaces and learn about the people who lived at Te Wairoa in the 1880's. Walk beside the stream where large wild Rainbow trout are visible and see the Wairere Falls plunge over the cliffs. Finish with tea and hot scones at the very good Te Wairoa café.

Wai-O-Tapu

New Zealand 's most colourful and diverse volcanic area. Find colours of every tint and hue displayed in pools, lakes, craters, steam vents, mineral terraces and even the walking tracks. Stand beside The Artist's Palette with its hot and cold pools and steaming hissing fumeroles. The unique Champagne Pool bubbles and hisses, enclosed in a beautiful ochre-coloured petrified edge. At 10.15am every day, the famous Lady Knox Geyser erupts, reaching heights of 20 metres. Walks through Wai-O-Tapu vary between 30 and 75 minutes. Guide maps are provided.

Orakei Korako

Take the little ferry boat across Lake Ohakuri to Orakei Korako. Wander through a hidden valley of colour, hot springs , gushing geysers and breath taking natural beauty. 20 million litres of hot water flow over silica terraces every day. Salfe wakways take you close to boiling pools and geysers, to panoramic views through native bush and into a rare geothermal cave. The description hidden valley comes from the park's isolation from the outside world.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Created from the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, Waimangu is the world's newest geothermal area. Walk down the valley past craters and lakes. Be amazed at the intense, changing colour of the Inferno Crater. See the boiling stream cool as it nears Lake Rotomahana . Look for the forming, colourful sinter formations at Warbrick Terrace. When you reach the lake, don't miss the boat trip to see where the world-famous Pink and White Terraces were before the eruption. Pass by steaming cliffs, the Tarawere Chasm and Starhill Crater. There is a complimentary bus service running regularly down and back up the valley.
